Relay For Life at APW Middle School
Tobacco Free Network of Oswego County Present

Parish, N.Y. (June 6, 2008) - 36 teams comprised of 413 participants gathered at the APW Middle School Track on Friday evening, June 6, 2008 for the community’s first Relay For Life. This American Cancer Society event is an overnight experience designed to bring together those who have been touched by cancer. At Relay, people from the community gather to celebrate survivors, remember those lost to cancer, and to fight back against this disease. The event at APW raised nearly $42,000 to support the American Cancer Society in its lifesaving mission to eliminate cancer as a major health issue. The Tobacco Free Network was present that evening in support of the event and to provide materials about the harm that tobacco and the tobacco industry causes as well as information regarding the New York State Smokers’ Quitline.

According to the American Cancer Society, smoking is related to at least 15 different cancers and accounts for 30% of all cancer deaths; the major single cause of cancer mortality in the United States. Smoking is responsible for about 87% of lung cancer deaths, is the leading cause of cancer death in both men and women, and is one of the most difficult cancers to treat.
